5 Tips For Keeping It "Clean" Over Spring Break

Get ready to hit the...road, sky, tracks, trails or whatever means of transportation to get you to your Spring Break destination! No matter what mode you take to get there, someone is going to be hungry along the way. We have 5 tips for you as you start packing.

1. Consider snacks that don't make a mess

No one wants to arrive with what they were snacking on schmeared across their shirts or better yet you don't want to have to send your road trip car in for a full detailing after your trip.

2. Stay away from stuff you cannot pronounce

Look for snacks that are made using clean, whole ingredients. Avoid ingredients that sound like they were made in a lab. To name a few:

  • Food dyes - blue 1 and 2, green 3, red 3, and yellow 6
  • Refined Sugars - Corn Syrup, Cane Sugar, Brown Rice Syrup
  • Binding agents - Vegetable Glycerin, Soy Lecithin, Soluble Corn Fiber

A good rule of thumb, is if you don't know what the ingredient is or if you can't pronounce it, it's probably not something you eat.

3. Find snack options that have a simple, short ingredient list

When looking for snacks, choose the ones with short simple ingredient lists. Similar to #2 above, read the ingredient list and look for snacks with only a handful of real, whole-food ingredients. Your body will thank you.

4. Avoid snacks that cont seed oils

We've been seeing more and more research about seed oils and their negative impacts on your body (and the environment). You may be asking what exactly is a seed oil? Here are the most common seed oils you'll see in foods; canola oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, safflower oil, cottonseed oil, grapeseed oil, soy oil, and ricebran oil.

Why are seed oils so bad?

Seed oils contain inflammatory linoleic acid, which is associated with heart disease, cancer, dementia, and other health problems. On top of health issues, seed oils are terrible for the environment and are one of the main drivers of deforestation in the world.

5. Do the easy thing and grab a Skout Organic snack.
