Last night was the first in our three-part Skout Backcountry Speaker Series, and we couldn't have been happier with the turnout! It was another packed house at Base Camp Brewing, and the atmosphere alone was exhilarating.
The packed room went silent as Willie McBride taught us that "the mind is primary." Relaying stories from his countless adventures — trekking across Patagonia, journeys in Yosemite, ultra racing in pitch darkness without a headlamp — Willie taught us the secrets of mental toughness he has picked up along the way.
Willie offered very practical tips on how to combat the discomfort, push the limits, and face our fears. Who would have thought that ice water and saunas could be so integral to mental training?!
We held a raffle with epic prizes from our sponsors, with proceeds benefitting SheJumps, whose mission is to increase the participation of women and girls in outdoor activities. We then had the chance to hear from Erin Monahan, and her work with Terra Incognita, a feminist response to environmental and social injustice.
Thank you to everyone who joined us! We'll see you on March 21st as Jeremy Long shares the behind-the-scenes of the not-so-glamorous duties of a Race Director.
We want to offer a huge thanks to Base Camp Brewing for hosting us, and to our amazing partners at Bend Marathon, Evolution Healthcare and Fitness, Happy Mountain Kombucha, The Herb Shoppe, JT Racing, New Seasons Market, Outdoor Project, Planet Granite, SheJumps, Territory Run Co., and Wy'east Wolfpack!
And of course, thank you to Willie McBride for your friendship, and your willingness to share your expertise with us all!
Here's to running in the downpour, hiking in the snow, and adventuring in the fog. See you out there!
